BLOOD-STONE 2024-2025 Archival Pigment print on paper Edition of 100

Courtesy Friends of Muhka

I have received an invitation to create this year's artist edition for the celebration of the New Year for the friends of Muhka.

In light of the current global turmoil, where numerous individuals are grappling with the challenges posed by warfare alongside various social and political dilemmas, it is crucial to foster optimistic thoughts and sustain hope for a more promising future.

The concept of healing stones resonates deeply with me, serving as a powerful source of positive energy for a fresh beginning in 2025.

Bloodstone is particularly noteworthy due to its striking visual appeal and profound symbolism. It aids in anchoring spiritual energy within the physical realm, thereby offering stability and resilience during difficult periods.

Trained as a miniature painter in Tehran and living and working in Antwerp since 1992, Maryam Najd has developed a highly individualised visual language rooted in two ancient cultural traditions: Persian and Western. Her work evokes a critical but respectful dialogue between these two worlds. Gender, sexuality, femininity, nationality, origin and the politics of the body are recurring themes in the series of paintings she has produced over the past decades. The underlying questions remain: Who am I in this world? As a person? As a woman? As an artist?
